On Saturday 26th June 2021, at the Kabgayi genocide memorial site, 1093 bodies of victims of the genocide against the Tutsi were accorded decent burial.

The bodies were discovered in different places and include the 985 bodies that were recovered in the terrain where it was going to be erected the maternity ward in Kabgayi hospital.

Kabanda Ildephonse who was 25 during the genocide, says there are some of the names of the religious consecrated who connived with the killers to get the Tutsi killed, which he still remembers. These include Monsignor Nsengiyumva Thaddée who was the bishop of Kabgayi and monsignor Vincent Nsengiyumva who was the Archbishop of Kigali.

In his testimony, he said that when celebrating masses during the genocide, the priests told the killers not to kill the Tutsi inside the Diocese’s buildings lest the building could deteriorate or fall down.

He added that “I condemn those who deny the genocide against the Tutsi and compare them to its perpetrators”

Dr Jean Damascene Bizimana, Executive Secretary of the National Commission for the Fight against Genocide (CNLG) said that even though there was made a step to recognize the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi, there currently the challenge of those deny and trivialize it.

He said that a big number of Tutsi was killed in Kabgayi where they had sought refuge with the hope to be safe as there were religiously consecrated.

He said that apart from the religious, there are some medics and nurses and midwives who killed those they were supposed to cure, and some of them continue to deny and trivialize the genocide against the Tutsi.

Alice Kayitesi, Governor of the Southern Province said that the fact that there are still people conceal information about bodies of the victims of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi, is an infringement to the unity and reconciliation process.

He said” it is not a difficult thing to provide information about bodies of the victims of the genocide against the Tutsi. It can be even done secretly by writing a short note. What is important is to provide such information.”

The bodies that were accorded a decent burial were an addition to other 11.014 bodies in this memorial.
