Ngororero: Commemoration of the Tutsi killed in Kavumu

On June 08, 2021 in Kavumu Sector, Ngororero District, a ceremony for the 27th commemoration of the Genocide against the Tutsi was held in particular memory of the Tutsi killed in Kavumu and its surroundings.

The Kavumu Genocide Memorial is home to about 374 victims of the Genocide against the Tutsi.

In a talk on the history of the Genocide against the Tutsi, it was recalled that Tutsi in the area were persecuted and killed before 1994, which shows that the Genocide against the Tutsi was a long-term plan.

In his testimony, Cyirima, a genocide survivor in the former Bayi Sector, recalled the atrocities committed against the Tutsi in the area and said that Dr Léon Mugesera's speech at Kabaya in 1992 played a key role in making the genocide as brutal as it was in the region.

The President of IBUKA in Ngororero District thanked the authorities for their continued support to the survivors and thanked the former RPF-Inkotanyi soldiers for stopping the Genocide.

Ngororero District Mayor, Ndayambaje Godefroid thanked the Genocide survivors for their heroism. He said the commemoration is a time to remember the victims of the Genocide against the Tutsi and to reflect on its consequences and fight against genocide ideology.
