This Tuesday, September 29, 2020, Mr Abubacar Marie Tambadou Assistant Secretary General and Registrar in the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT) visited the National Commission for the Fight against Genocide (CNLG).
Registrar Tambadou who is on his first official visit to Rwanda since his appointment in July 2020, was received by Dr Jean-Damascène Bizimana, Executive Secretary of the CNLG and their discussions focussed on matters of mutual interest between the Government of Rwanda and the Mechanism.
Registrar Tambadou reiterated the Mechanism’s commitment to strengthening collaboration, cooperation and partnership with Rwanda for the interest of Justice, especially in pursue of fugitives of the Genocide against the Tutsi. He also reiterated the importance attached to victims and survivors of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
Dr Jean-Damascène Bizimana hailed improvement in relationship between the Mechanism and Rwanda. He however recalled that there is a need for enhanced collaboration in the fight against genocide denial and the spread of genocide ideology carried out by genocide convicts sentenced by the ICTR who continue to deny the Genocide against the Tutsi and spread genocide ideology through the books they publish from prisons. He emphasized that, as genocide convicts, they shouldn’t have the right to publish books about the Genocide they were found guilty of, since they tend to deny it or distort its history whereas the genocide against the Tutsi is a fact of common notoriety that is not subject to any debate.
He also recalled Rwanda’s commitment to collaborate with the Mechanism on the case of Félicien Kabuga in matters of proofs, testimonies and witnesses.
Apart from the CNLG, during his official visit to Rwanda that runs from September 28, 2020 trough October2, 2020, Registrar Tambadou will visit different institutions including IBUKA, umbrella of genocide survivors associations.
